Room-by-room removal without losing track of decisions
Whole-home projects can involve many small decisions. Mark closed rooms or keep zones clearly, then identify the spaces included in the estimate. This gives the crew a single approved map of the job.
If the property is still occupied, plan around pets, medications, daily-use items, and safe walking routes. Vacant properties may still contain records, keys, utility equipment, and fixtures that should remain.

Build the estimate around access and volume
The amount of material matters, but so does the route from each room to the loading area. Narrow staircases, long carries, elevator reservations, limited parking, and items that need disassembly can increase labor.
Point out these conditions during the first conversation or walkthrough. Clear information produces a cleaner estimate and a more realistic schedule.
Sort only as much as the decision requires
You do not need to create dozens of categories. A simple system of keep, family review, donate or sell, and remove is usually easier to maintain.
Donation acceptance depends on the receiving organization and the item’s condition. Do not assume every usable item will be accepted; make a backup plan for items a charity cannot take.
